THE Office of the President has halted the eviction of over 300 residents from Namatovu village in Najja sub-county, Mukono district.

Proprietors of AIM Motors, a car dealing company, had directedthe residents to vacate the 126-acre piece of land, which the company recently purchased from Alozius Wabuyi.

The company, which had secured a court order to evict the tenants, wants to grow fruits for export on the land.
Through the office of the resident district commissioner, the residents petitioned President Yoweri Museveni to intervene.

Last Wednesday, officials from State House, led by Edward Ochieng, a presidential aide on land issues, visited the village and halted the eviction. Ochieng directed the company to compensate the tenants before any eviction order is implemented.

A representative from AIM Motors, Tokili Abadi, a Pakistan national, said the company was willing to surrender 16 acres of the land to resettle the tenants. He also said the company would compensate the tenants.

The deputy resident district commissioner, Betty Ssemakula, said her office handles many such cases every day.
