Farmers get sh34m oxen
LIRA-The Uganda Red Cross Society has given 60 oxen and 30 ploughs to farmer groups in Ogur and Apala sub-counties to boost food production. The donation worth sh34m was given to 30 selected groups, which included former Lord’s Resistance Army abductees and people with HIV/AIDS. Speaking at the hand-over on Saturday, the Red Cross food security officer, Reuben Aine, advised farmers to join groups and boost their income through growing high-value crops. He said the groups comprised 4,500 members, adding that 200 others would benefit from the donation. Aine warned the beneficiaries against diverting the animals to pay dowry or selling them. Rose Ongom, the district Red Cross vice-chairperson, advised the farmers to preserve the food they harvest so as to avoid starving.
