The Uganda National Roads Authority has been directed to evict encroachers on road reserves.

The directive affects all districts, including rural and urban business centres with buildings protruding into the 15-meter road reserve from the murram and tarmac roads.

It was given by the works and transport minister John Nasasira.

The minister criticised local leaders, whom he said had failed to guide developers on government policies.

“The authority must demolish property that is in the road reserves,” Nasasira said.

He was responding to concerns raised by the parliamentary committee on physical infrastructure about the ministry’s 2009/2010 budget at Parliament yesterday.

The committee asked for the national status of the road network for the last five years and the plan for the improvement of the transport sector.

Nasasira said pavements would be constructed on all urban roads.

The new plan also involves routine maintenance of over 3,000km of paved roads, maintenance of 12,258km of unpaved roads, upgrading of 475km gravel roads, maintenance of 1,053km of district roads and 22,000km of rural roads.

The ministry budget increased from sh62.173b in 2008/2009 to sh78.713b this financial year.

When questioned on the increase, Nasasira said the ministry had embarked on a number of national projects.

These included construction of bridges, roads in oil processing areas and in urban areas.
