UGANDAN badminton players settled for bronze in the boys’ and girls’ doubles at the Africa Junior Championships that concluded yesterday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

With girls' top seed Shamim Bangi surprisingly losing her quarterfinal match to Seychelles’ Allisen Camille 21-16, 21-17 and the boys out of the event before the quarterfinal stage, the players stepped up their game in the doubles to win silverware for Uganda.

Daisy Nakalyango, who fainted during her individual quarter-final game on Friday, recovered to combine with Bangi to beat the Ethiopian duo of Yakob Ayelech and Dila Roza in straight sets. But they did not keep the same momentum when they faced South Africa top doubles seeds and lost in straight sets.

Herbert Ebayo and Ian Senoga, having dispensed off Mauritius’ Jason Jerome and Paul Christopher in the quarter-finals, lost to a South African pair in the semi-finals to settle for bronze.

The team was expected to return home yesterday.
