THE Uganda Bureau of Statistics will require over $33m (about sh69b) to carry out the forthcoming national census in 2012, an official has said.

Norman Ntalo, bureau’s geo-information officer, said whereas the annual population growth rate is at 3.2% (1 million people), the UN estimates the census cost per person at $1 (about sh2,100).

Addressing journalists at Mbale Resort Hotel recently, Ntalo said the census would consider the 52 districts that were existent by 2002.

He added that new districts would be covered under the mother districts.

“We are updating boundaries of the administrative units to establish the correct units and names of places,” Ntalo said.

“The census will help us determine the household characteristics, poverty levels and changing patterns of migrations so as to ascertain how effective government policies have impacted on the population.”
