THE Cabinet will this week discuss electoral reforms ahead of the 2011 general elections, parliament heard on Monday.
Deputy Attorney general Freddie Ruhindi informed Parliament that amendments, including those proposed by the opposition, were currently before the Cabinet.
He added that the process of reforming the laws would be competed before February next year.
The opposition handed a number of proposed electoral reforms to Parliament recently.
Key among the reforms was the restoration of the presidential term limits, the disbandment of the Electoral Commission and withdrawal of army representation from Parliament.
However, last week, the commission got another seven year-term, sparking protests from the opposition.
Reacting to Ruhindi's remarks, opposition chief whip Kassiano Wadri said: “The country has been yearning for electoral reforms. We would like to know when the Government is bringing these reforms.â€
The elections are slated for February 2011. Diplomats have expressed concern about the need for voter education and the update of the register.
