The Police in Iganga have said the increasing accidents in the district are due to bodaboda motorcycles owned by politicians.

Khasule Ogwal, the district traffic Police boss, on Sunday said politicians give motorcycles to people who lack basic training in traffic regulations.

“I have tried to arrest them but politicians come with the excuse that we are interfering with their voters,” Ogwal said.

He explained that a top district leader recently told him to relax strictness on bodabodas. “I think you can see the state of affairs now,” he added.

The RDC, Swaibu Wagwa, recently told the Police to grant the cyclists more time to acquire riding permits.

Tom Kalende, a stage manager, said people who ride motorcycles attached to politicians are reckless.

“We refer to them as bunkenke (tension) since they are ever in a rush to obtain money. The Police cannot confiscate their motorcycles for long.”

Ogwal said 26 motorcycles got involved in road accidents last month, and 18 in June.
