ASK THE EXPERTS

Dear Sir,

Two years ago, I graduated with a degree in development studies and would like to pursue a post-graduate course. However, I do not have appropriate information on which course to take. Please advise me on the choice to make, depending on today’s job market.

Dear BD,

Development studies is a multi-disciplinary branch of social sciences which has historically placed a particular focus on issues related to social and economic development.

It is usually offered as a specialised master’s degree in a number of universities and, less commonly, as an undergraduate degree.

Students of development studies often choose careers in international organisations such as the UN or the World Bank.

Dr. Augustus Nuwagaba, an expert in development and poverty eradication, says development studies is an eclectic course. It covers a wide range of disciplines.

It offers courses in economics, population studies, sociology, social work, politics, international relations and many other fields.

It is unfortunate that you do not tell us your career interest, but Dr. Nuwagaba says it is important that you focus on the market needs of today.

As the world becomes more advanced so does the need for policy analysts and economic planning experts.

This is an area in which a post-graduate qualification in development studies can fully sharpen your skills in becoming a policy or economic analyst.

You could also think about a career in the field of monitoring and evaluation. Nuwagaba says today Uganda needs expertise in these areas.

Most ministries and other organisations need policy analysts. However, there are not many qualified people to fill these positions.

You could go to Uganda Management Institute on Jinja Road for good post-graduate courses in these fields. Makerere University Institute of Statistics, Faculty of Economics and Management and Makerere University Business School also offer relevant post graduate courses.

However, consider your career goals and your interests and define them appropriately before making major life changing decisions. God bless you.
