THE Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has secured land for the expansion of Kasese Airfield.

The project that will run in two phases. The first is expected to cost sh22b, Ignie Igundura, the authority’s public relations manager, said yesterday.

He added that the authority was about to complete the compensation of the affected residents. “We have done about 98% of the land compensation,” he said.

Earlier, media reports quoted sh1.5b as compensation the CAA was to pay over 600 persons.

The reports said the CAA had acquired 74.86 hectares of land from the district land board, town council and residents staying in Saluti A and B in Kanyangeya Parish to enable it upgrade the airfield into an international airport.

CAA intends to increase the airfield’s length from 1,750 to 2,500 metres and width from 30 to 45 metres and change the surface from grass to tarmac.

Igunduura said when complete the airport will handle a 767 Boeing that can carry up to 680 passengers.

The body will also construct new terminal buildings to handle the increasing number of clients who will be using the airport and a mobile traffic air control tower, runway, night lnding lights and a warehouse.

The development of facilities at airfields are in line with the implementation of the President’s manifesto pledge to transform the air transport industry through upgrade of upcountry aerodromes at Arua, Kasese, Soroti, Jinja, Tororo, Adjumani, Moyo and Nebbi.

CAA is currently modernising Arua Airfield terminal building under the programme.
