UGANDANS have had reservations about locally made clothes. No wonder most of them wore imported ones. But not anymore today! Chui, Freedum, Sylvia Owori fashion houses among others have given a new allure to locally made clothes.

“Since the organic cotton fabrics are manufactured in Uganda, I thought I should challenge the clothes from Nigeria, Ghana, China and India,” says Herbert Musisi who sells Ugandan-made wear at Chui outlet shop at Garden City.

He sells jeans printed in silver or gold metallic hues patched with leather or other bits of fabric; men’s luxury suits made with subtle prints, ladies’ miniskirts and half coats, T-shirts, cotton and silk neckties, flat-fronted trousers for men, leather jackets, sporty casual wear and kids’ fancy clothes and shoes.

To put it another way, we are definitely set for a razzmatazz in homemade clothes. The Freedum outlet at Uganda House stocks nice T-shirts in all colours for men and women.

But local designer, Sylvia Owori, has also joined the trend. She is designing uptrend evening dresses, men’s suits and casual wear.
