DID you know that a leader is needed in every arena in life? Why? Well, leaders are needed to paave the way in whatever venture because they determine the value standards and tools those under them can use to perform their duties.

These include tools, direction, training, procedures, advice, documentation, information, rules, planning and discipline.

The employee detects these standards, combines them with previous experiences and then uses these values to guide her. For instance, you may have been to a workplace where the atmosphere is formal and strict, and then in another where it is casual and strict. Both are good when used in the right environment or the right company.

Another important aspect of leadership is to listen to the people one is leading. If a leader does not listen to employees, they interpret this as being disrespectful. This results in employees treating their customers and each other with the same level of disrespect.

Interestingly, this principle is the same regardless of the level of leadership. If you treat a housegirl badly, she will in turn treat your children that way.

So, as a leader, you must be careful about the message you are passing on to those you lead. You are their eyes, ears and the mirror which they look at to reflect your actions. Therefore, those actions must be impeccable for your leadership to be considered great.
