THE Police in Kabale have impounded a Rwandan registered trailer, number RAD 911F/RC 0533, over transporting illegally mined iron ore to Rwanda.

The driver, Emmanuel Ngiruwonsanga, and his turn-boy only identified as Ntihemuka, both Rwandan citizens, were arrested.

The south-western regional inspector of mines, Gerald Ereku, said he found the lorry being loaded with black stones at Nyakijumba trading center, outside Kabale town.

Ereku said the two men did not have a mining, dealer’s or movement permits.

He added that illegal mining is so rampant in Muko, Kanungu and Kisoro, leading to a loss of government revenue.

“The region is endowed with a lot of minerals that include gold, iron, wolfram, tin, petroleum and can generate a lot of revenue for both local and central governments if extracted properly,” said Ereku.

He challenged local leaders and security agencies to help his office by monitoring and reporting any illegal mining activities in their areas.
