ASK THE EXPERTS

Dear Sir,

I am a third year student of economics at Makerere University. I want to go for a Masters in either US or Britain but I do not have money. What steps do I need to take to get a scholarship?
David

David, before you think of a scholarship, ask yourself what field you have a passion for that you would like to specialise in. According to Dr. Augustus Nuwagaba, a development consultant, you need to decide if specialising in economics will do for you. Getting a master’s degree in economics is not an easy task to achieve by any means.

It is based around students who are seeking careers in technical financial analysis, lawyers who are looking to gain an advantage in microeconomics, theory and cost benefit analysis, as well as individuals who are aspiring to achieve balance for positions in the workforce such as consulting and banking.

Though the pay can be high, depending on what job you do get, the main focus is whether it is rewarding for you as a person. Is this the job you want as your career? Do you want your career evolving around the evolution of economics? Dr. Nuwagaba says when you can answer these questions then you can make an informed decision.

If you are certain that this is what you want to go for, you need to start reading about universities in the US and Britain. Usually their websites have the admission requirements: both academic and tuition fees. Please note that for most universities, a scholarship is only given after you have been admitted to the university. Bear in mind that it is competitive; and you need to have attained a first class degree or second upper division degree.

The university websites also usually have information on financial aid or the scholarship types available for students from the developing countries. Some graduate schools and masters departments offer special scholarships in the form of fellowships. Do not be afraid talk to other people. Your lecturers at the Faculty of Economics can also be helpful.
