The Police will ferry the dead to the city mortuary in Kampala for inability to pay a handling fee of sh20,00 for every corpse taken to Kawolo Hospital morgue, in Mukono district.
Kawolo Hospital authorities mid-August introduced a sh20,000 charge on each body taken by the Police to the hospital’s mortuary.
Another sh20,000 was also introduced on each postmortem, rape or defilement and mental illness check-ups ordered by Police.
The Police have protested the new charge in vain, arguing that they have no money.
The hospital near Lugazi town, has often been overwhelmed by huge numbers of road accident victims on the Jinja–Kampala highway.
“We have decided to take the bodies from Mukono to the City Mortuary where we are not meant to pay for the services,† the chief investigations boss of Mukono Police station, Mark Odong, said.
He explained that bodies easily identified by the next of kin resident in Mukono will be taken to Kawolo Hospital for easy accessibility and transportation.
Odong said the Police find it easy to get post mortem reports from Mulago Hospital in Kampala than at Kawolo Hospital.
He, however, noted that ferrying bodies to the city mortuary would inflate the expenditure due to the high fuel costs.
Kawolo medical superintendent, Dr. Ivan Kamya said the fee was introduced because the hospital was providing an extra service by keeping bodies of people who died outside the facility.
He said the hospital was only mandated to keep bodies of people who die from inside it.
Kamya advised the Police to take rape and defilement victims plus the suspects for mental illness to Police surgeons if they cannot afford the charges.
