THE Uganda Lands Commission allocated the contested plot of land and part of Muwafu road in Nakasero to the lands ministry, the chairperson has said.

Mayanja Nkagi yesterday said the controversial piece of land that includes a stretch of road, was allocated to the ministry three years ago.

The disclosure followed an August 31 letter by Kampala Central MP Erias Lukwago, demanding an explanation from the Uganda National Roads Authority over the alleged sale of part of Muwafu Road, which connects Kitante to Lourdel Road.

The road junction and bordering plots were fenced off last month by unknown persons, allegedly to make way for the construction of a commercial building, drawing public outcry.

Nkagi said the Government, with funding from the World Bank, would set up a Land Information Registry, which would be housed on a one-storey structure to be built on the plot.

The project will reportedly be executed by the Private Sector Foundation.

Nkangi argued that part of Muwafu Road would not be completely closed.

“Land re-planning and re-zoning is normal in urban development. What is a road or a school may not be necessary 50 years to come,” he argued.

But Kampala mayor Nasser Sebaggala yesterday visited the site and ordered the removal of the iron sheet fence on the plot.

He said although Kampala City Council was not opposed to the development of the plot, officials of the lands ministry had to follow procedure.

The roads authority said the contested road is not under their control.
