I refer to an article titled “Gulu receives sh6b for water†that appeared in The New Vision of September 8, where it was reported that preparations were underway to replace the asbestos cement pipes in the area with modern ones.

The story sent chills down my spine and I now worry for my life and the lives of all the people in Gulu who have been using piped water.
It is common knowledge that asbestos have thin fibres that when released, can get lodged into the body, causing inflammation which may eventually result in the formation of cancerous tumours, particularly on the mesothelium – the lining of the lungs.
Other affected areas may include the peritoneum – the lining of the abdomen – and the pericardium – the lining around the heart. Can those in charge of the health inspectorate and the National Water explain why the problem has been ignored for so long? I do not really know how safe we are in this country?
The replacement of these pipes should have been done long time ago. If such pipes still exist in other districts, it is high time they were replaced. Imagine the damage and health hazard they could have caused over the years! Moses Oguti Gulu
