FOUR academics are vying for the post of vice-chancellor of Makerere University.
A source yesterday said Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, the dean of the faculty of computing and information technology (CIT) and Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa, the outgoing deputy vice-chancellor, are among the contestants.
Baryamureeba, a professor of computer science, has been a member of the university council as well as the dean of the CIT faculty since its inception in 2001.
Tibatemwa, on the other hand, is a professor of law. She has worked as the first deputy vice-chancellor in charge of academics since 2004 and acted as the vice-chancellor on several occasions.
Others contesting for the post are the dean of social sciences, Prof. Edward Kirumira, and the dean of the faculty of economics, Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu, the source said.
Baryamureeba yesterday said he wanted to “transform†the 87-year-old institution.
“I am applying for the post because I am convinced we need to uplift Makerere.â€
He said he would focus on enhancing teaching and learning, research and innovation as well as networking and partnerships.
Kirumira, a professor of social sciences, would neither confirm nor deny the reports.
The post of vice-chancellor fell vacant after Prof. Livingstone Luboobi’s term expired in May.
The deadline for submission of applications is Monday. Applicants must have seven years experience in leadership positions. The source said the council would meet next week and shortlist three candidates.
