THE Police have arrested members of a cult which broke from the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church in Luweero district.

The 11 cult members, whom the Police rounded up on Wednesday, had removed their children from school and sold their property, saying the end of the world was about to come.

The cult also discouraged its members from eating cooked food, drinking beverages or hot things, including tea.
The suspects were on Wednesday paraded before journalists at Luweero Police Station.

The regional Police spokesman, Lameck Kigozi, said the suspects were arrested at Wannonda village in Butuntumula sub-county where they had gathered at the home of one of the followers, David Kaggwa.

“These people are a security threat to the community,” Kigozi said.

Deborah Namungu, 42, a cult member, said the group deserted Ngogolo SDA Church in Butuntumula sub-county because the congregation was adamant about the impending end of the world.

“We told them to renew their faith because the world is ending soon, but they thought we were merely excited,” she said.

She said at the time of the arrest, the members had converged for a 10-day prayer session to renew their faith.

Asked why the members eat raw food, Namungu said they preferred to eat the plant cells in their natural form.
