Hon. Akbar Hussein Godi, was arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife Rehema Caesar, who was killed on December 4, last year. The MP for Arua Municipality got out on bail. On August this year he married Shamim Habiba Atiku, an interior designer. Rehema Aanyu caught up with the couple at their pad on Entebbe Road

Hon Godi, barely a year after Rehema’s brutal murder and also at the time when you are facing murder charges, you decide to wed. Why?
There are three things in Islam that cannot be delayed; prayer, burial and marriage. I am a devout Muslim who detests fornication. You should know that my late mother was pregnant with me when she went to Mecca.

How long have you known your new wife?
What matters is that Shamim knows me and I know her very well. Where we met matters less.

What attracted you to her?
Our being together was an act of God. I admired her fear of Allah. Her beauty is secondary.

What did you give her as mahr (dowry)?
She asked for the Holy Quran.

What would you have loved to give her?
A customized golden ring with an inscription of a key verse in the Holy Quran, which talks about the modesty and chastity of a woman.

Shamim, why did you ask for a Quran when you could have asked for…?
Shamim: I respect my religion. I know I had the right to ask for anything but the Quran was my choice.

What are you adding to his life that he did not have before?
Godi: Generally speaking, in Islam, it is my responsibility as a man to provide for my wife not her to add to me.

When are you expecting your first bundle of joy?
Only God knows

Any temptation from other women?
A lot. Women come as clients seeking legal advice only to ask me to meet them in Serena or Protea for a cup of tea. I also receive SMS and calls from all sorts of women complimenting my smartness and oratory skills in Parliament. One lady even wanted me to accompany her to Ghana. I wear my wedding ring all the time but women can’t be deterred by it. Sadly, many want married men because we appear stable and mature. There is a time a lady called to ask if I knew of a good mechanic. I gave her the contact. The next day, she invited me for lunch at Faze 2 and presented me with a Pierre Cardin designer suit. I told her I was married and preferred to be the one giving presents rather than receiving them.

Do you plan to marry up to four wives?
I went through a polygamous family and I would not want to go thought it again. I pray to God that it (marrying again) should not happen to me.

Finally, who is Akbar Hussein Godi?
I am a humble man who loves the road less travelled, extremely inquisitive and very ambitious. I love being in the know. Honesty is a virtue I greatly treasure. Seeing is believing to me because there are lots of conmen around. I take pride in being a Muslim. I made it to Parliament at 25 and my target was to be a PhD holder by this time. I paid my own school fees up to S.6, which took a lot of determination and zeal.
