PRINCE Gabula Nadiope IV of Bugabula chiefdom has been named the new Kyabazinga (king) of Busoga.

Shortly after 11:00am on Sunday, acting Kyabazinga Daudi Wakholi Kaunhe introduced Nadiope to a gathering at Busoga Square in Jinja town amid ululation.

Men prostrated allowing Nadiope to walk on their backs as he headed to and from the podium.

“Basoga, this is your Kyabazinga (king) whom the majority of hereditary chiefs have chosen to lead you,” Kaunhe, the hereditary chief of Bukhooli, said.

The ceremony was also attend by chiefs Munulo Luba (Bunyha), Fred Kakaire (Bugweri), Christopher Nkono Mutyaba (Bukono) and John Nanyumba Ntale (Bunyhole)
Kaunhe said eight chiefs on Sunday resolved to have Gabula as the new Kyabazinga.

He said the other chiefs stood down and left Gabula unopposed.

He, however, did not explain the absence of princes Izimba Gologolo (Kigulu), Columbus Wambuzi (Bulamogi), Juma Ntembe (Butembe), Kisiki (Busiki) and Tabingwa (Luuka) during the event.

After being declared king, Gabula was whisked to the “white house”, a structure that serves as the official building for the anti-Muloki chiefs, on Kissinger Road in Jinja town.
The group was thrown out of the Bugembe palace in May.

However, Gabula’s plan to perform the required traditional coronation rituals at Mpumwiire hill were thwarted by armed anti riot Police.

His convoy led by bodaboda cyclists was blocked by military and Police personnel at the foothill as they fired teargas canisters into the crowd.

Maxwell Okidi, the Jinja acting district Police commander, advised the people to instead host the events at Nadiope’s Budhumbula palace in Kamuli town.

“This hill is out of bounds for now. We are under instructions to ensure that nobody travels uphill beyond the security cordon,” Okidi told The New Vision.

Earlier, royal guards and the youth had blocked the royal chiefs from accessing the kingdom headquarters in Bugembe. They threatened to lynch any journalist at the premises.

The Katukiro (premier), Wilson Muwereza, recently proposed that the October 5 elections be nullified until a final court ruling is made in a case in which Prince Kakaire wanted the Kyabazinga title removed from Wambuzi.

Busoga has been without a Kyabazinga since the demise of Henry Wako Muloki on September 1 last year.

Weeks after Muloki’s death, two petitioners, Crammer Sajjabi Imaka and Abubakari Kakaire, tried to have provisions of the Busoga 2000 constitution amended. They had also secured a court order blocking election of Muloki’s successor although the botched October 31 polls went ahead to name Wambuzi as his father’s successor.

Gabula led the walkout by candidates who cited irregularities and harassment of royal chiefs by Kanyamas (muscle men).
