THE head teachers of primary schools in Kibaale district have demanded the timely release of Universal Primary Education capitation grants if standards are to improve.

The secretary of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) in Kibaale, William Baleke, expressed concern that although the Government had increased the grant, there was always a delay in its release which slowed down the system.

Baleke made the remarks during the teachers’ day celebrations at Kakeka play-grounds in Bwanswa sub-county. He said teachers should not be entirely blamed for the schools’ poor performance.

Baleke said some challenges were caused by the Government and parents not providing necessities on time. He added that the pupils also attended only 30% class time due to domestic demands, and usually had only one meal a day.

The teachers also reiterated the demand to increase their monthly payment, if the standards are to improve. The Kibaale district LC5 chairman, George Namyaka, challenged teachers to be professional.

Namyaka asked the Government to raise the salary of the teachers from sh200,000 to at least sh300, 000 to improve their performance.

“Given the high cost of living, teachers need salary increment so that they can initiate income generating projects,” he said. Namyaka cautioned teachers who absent themselves to desist from the habit before they lose their jobs.

UNATU promotes the social, intellectual, economic and professional interests of its members and helps them to serve the learners better.
