THE Uganda Rugby Cranes Sevens team has been dropped from the world rugby body IRB George Sevens circuit in South Africa December 11-12.

The event, to be played at George’s Outeniqua Park Stadium, will feature 16 teams including the 12 ‘core’ sides that play in all the eight IRB circuits that include, Dubai, Wellington, Kenya Safari, USA, Australia, Edinburgh and Hong Kong.

“We were not invited due to the poor performance in the Kenya Safari and Namibia Sevens circuits mid this year. But we are building the team and we expect to be there next year,” Uganda rugby manager Yayiro Kasasa explained.

“It does not make any sense travelling and you are whipped by 50 points. That is why we went back to the drawing board and started rebuilding an independent sevens side,” he added.

Uganda won the bowl in both the Kenya Safari and Morocco Tangier sevens series before losing the bowl final to Tunisia in Namibia last month.

Reigning IRB Sevens World Series champion, South Africa, will be defending their title for the first time.

They face two other African sides – Kenya and Zimbabwe before taking on France in the preliminaries in Pool A.

The 12 ‘core’ teams are rugby playing powerhouses Argentina, Australia, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, USA, and Wales.
