UNCCI partners with Turkey

MEMBERS of the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI) are to explore business opportunities with the Turkish private sector from the city of Izmir.

MEMBERS of the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI) are to explore business opportunities with the Turkish private sector from the city of Izmir.

This new effort follows the recent visit by Gaggawala Wambuzi, the trade state minister, to Turkey.
UNCCI and the Izmir Chamber of Commerce are set to begin talks to boost partnership between members of the two chambers.

The preparations are to be led by Olive Kigongo, the chamber boss and Ekrem Demirtas, the president of the executive board of the Izmir chamber.

Turkey’s economy was once like Uganda is today, dominated by rural-based agriculture.

By 2007, agriculture’s contribution to the economy had dropped to 8.9% of GDP. The country has witnessed major improvement in tourism, with over 30 million visitors contributing 20 Billion U.S per year.

Izmir, a city founded by Alexander the Great in 340 B.C is the third most populous city in Turkey, has the second largest Turkish port after Istanbul, a population of over 3 million people living in ten towns and is a free zone. The city is served international flights through Adnan Menderes Airport and fast-speed trains.

From Izmir, UNCCI’s members shall explore opportunities in importing consumer electronics and home appliances, banking, water-transport, construction, textiles, oil refining, iron and steel, machinery and motor vehicles. To Izmir , UNCCI shall explore opportunities in exporting Soya beans, sunflower seeds, cotton, dairy products, vegetables, watermelons, coffee, vegetable fats, sugar, tobacco and raw hides and skins.
