EDITOR—I was appalled by the New Vision’s story, “IGG drops charges on Bakoko Bakoru†published on Wednesday. What message is the IGG sending to public servants who violate public office? Most importantly, what is he telling the ordinary Ugandans whose toil in the form of taxes and pension investments is squandered?
In the face of the rampant corruption and its devastating implication on the fight against poverty, I would imagine that the enforcement of punitive action and justice is something of fundamental priority for a poor country like Uganda. The IGG should have initiated an extradition in collaboration with the Interpol and FBI to bring Bakoko to justice.
She should come and answer to these charges. It is ironical that she is hiding in the US which is showing signs of donor fatigue (refer to Clinton’s statements on corruption and Obama’s UN address to African leaders). The main reason is bad leadership and corruption. We need responsible and accountable leadership and not just on paper.
