By Hope Mafaranga Two people died when their car plunged into River Mpanga after a head-on collision with a trailer in Fort Portal town, Kabarole district on Tuesday.
The district officer in-charge of traffic, Fred Wamboga, said the dead were Praise Kabahinda, 25, a resident of Kitumba village and a man only identified as Sunday, a resident of Kasusu.
Wamboga said the two were coming from Dons pub in Fort Portal town when they collided with a truck that was travelling from Kyenjojo to Fort Portal at around 5:00am.
He added that the truck driver, Kamate Kabuyaya and the turn-boy, Kambera Bikudera, both from Butembo in the DR Congo, were detained at Fort Portal Police Station.
Wamboga said Sunday, who was driving a Toyota salon car, failed to negotiate a sharp corner and lost control of the car.
He attributed the accident to drunkenness and reckless driving. A friend of the couple said he last saw them at around 2:00am at Dons Pub.
“We were together having fun. When I was leaving, I asked them to also leave, but they refused.
I was shocked at around 5:00am when Praise’s sister called me to say they had drowned in River Mpanga,†he said.
The bodies were retrieved and taken to Fort Portal Hospital mortuary.
