TORORO County MP Geoffrey Ekanya has called for the quick resolution of the proposal to split Tororo into Mukujju and Kisoko districts.

“People are in a state of despair because of the Government’s indecision and tension is building up in the district,” he told journalists at Parliament on Friday.

Ekanya said his constituents had summoned him over the matter.

In June, local government minister Adolf Mwesige tabled a proposal before Parliament seeking to create 14 new districts, including Mukujju and Kisoko.

Ekanya expressed fear that the minister may table a resolution seeking to create 12 districts, excluding the two contested areas, which he warned would result into chaos.

“We call on the Government to conclude this matter before the year ends,” he appealed.

“Malaba is the gateway and biggest inland port in Uganda and any chaos in Tororo would be costly to Uganda’s economy.”

Ekanya urged President Yoweri Museveni, who is consulting both the Teso and Japadhola cultural leaders, to expedite their discussions so that the creation of the districts is not delayed.
