THERE is nothing more frustrating than having to throw away vegetables, fruit or salad because they are withered or rotten. The same applies to dairy products like yoghurt and milk. Below are tips to help you make use of your food items when in plenty, without wasting anything.

Plan your menus
This will help cut down on frequenting the market
However, you do not have to buy too much, for example, foods like fruit, vegetables, fish and meat are perishable and will spoil quickly so you cannot buy in bulk. Alternatively, if you are bulk buying, you can plan recipes. This way you have already helped guarantee that you’ll use the food.

Wash and chop some fruits and vegetables right away
Keep them in small containers or bags in the front of the fridge where you can easily see them, rather than keeping them in the back of the fridge where you will forget them.

Cook in advance
It will help you out when you do not want to cook after a busy day. The way to get started is to cook a meal when you have time and freeze it. When you are tired and hungry, you just need to pop a plate of food into the microwave or warm it on a stove. This way your groceries will not go to waste!

Go vegetarian
Make at least three days meat free. Meat is generally the most expensive part of the meal. Choose pasta and sauces with vegetables. You can still have the same flavour, colour and texture with cheaper ingredients.

Include pasta, beans, rice and vegetables on your menu. These are great at stretching a meal since they add bulk to your meal and at the same time provide protein.

Do things that will help you enjoy shopping, such as picking a new ingredient or spice to try each week.
