NGO constructs 108 classrooms in Teso

BUILD Africa, an NGO based in Teso, has handed over 108 newly constructed classrooms to the community-founded primary schools in Teso sub-region. Pupils in these schools have been studying under trees and grass-thatched structures.

BUILD Africa, an NGO based in Teso, has handed over 108 newly constructed classrooms to the community-founded primary schools in Teso sub-region. Pupils in these schools have been studying under trees and grass-thatched structures.
“We have been successful in building these classroom blocks with support from the parents and the district education officers of Kumi and Bukedea,†said Sarah Ongole, the programme manager.
Ongole said the classrooms, built in 18 community-based schools, were estimated to have cost over sh1.8b. She added that each school got an administration block, furniture and pit-latrines for both teachers and pupils.
Build Africa, Ongole said, partnered with James Gambrill, Victoria Oakley of Build Africa UK, Chris Whitehouse, Kelly Reynolds, Becky Gibson, Jenna Wooding, Maz Howe (Child-Based UK) and Richard Vernon to fund the project.
Obosoi Primary School in Kumi was the first receive the classrooms, while Aputiput Primary School in Bukedea was commissioned next.
“Build Africa has played its part. It’s now upon us, the authorities and the parents to play our parts to realise value for money,†said Charles Okol, Kumi education officer.
Okol, Sam Ebukalin, the Kumi LC5 chief and Justine Akol, the Bukedea acting sports officer received the classrooms on behalf of their communities. Bukedea LC5 chairperson Rev. Sam Ebulalin told the parents to treat their children well because they walk long distances to attend school.
The construction of primary schools has complemented the Government’s effort to provide education and the local leaders predict a rise in enrolment.
