A lot is still needed to complete the Northern bypass

EDITOR—I was a little impressed with the Northern by-pass. It is the only road in Uganda that looks like a rural highway in America. However, despite being completed years behind schedule, it still does not look complete.

Apart from the speed limit signs of 70km/h, which limit is never adhered to on the only smooth road in the country, you must be a native to know which junction takes you where, since there are no direction signs. Even exits are not marked!

Ramps are already being eroded since no grass was planted to protect them from erosion. Slow-moving motorists drive in the speed lane and other crazy drivers use both lanes as if to send a signal that no one should overtake! Otherwise it is a ride like no other around Kampala save for the garbage that litters the road and the cows and goats that patrol it. I hope the Southern by-pass will be better planned! It is only in Uganda that some traffic officers do not know how to drive! What they know best is to shout at people, intimidate them, confiscate their licences and ask for “kitu kidogo” as small as sh1000! Gone are the days when Fred Yiga would get on national television and educate the people about traffic practices, rules and regulations.

It is only in Uganda that you see big nice homes growing like wild mushrooms in a disorderly manner. One wonders where roads to those homes are! Universities produce planners every year but where is the planning?

First was Muyenga, a rich man’s slum but now such slums have extended to Bukoto, Mutungo, Makindye and all the hills along Entebbe Road. It is pathetic to the eye! Minister John Nasasira has presided over decades of poor road network and where he tries to do some work there are always “Slow men at work”. Little wonder then that the Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara road will take forever! It is a shame to see people on such projects using more hands than machines to do most of the work!

It is only in Uganda that the power distribution company tells you to buy the transformer, the poles and all the wires if you want electricity.

However, after you have been connected at such a huge cost, nothing belongs to you but to the electricity company! That is daylight burglary but in Uganda it goes unpunished as the company continues to rip off Ugandans! It is only in Uganda that politician ride in huge cars that sail over potholes.
Why should they bother to fix the roads? Fuel and all repairs are done by the taxpayer, so the question of driving such expensive cars is never an issue.

As long as they wake up to vote “No change” they will continue to get fat on the sweat of the little people who cannot afford to take their children to school!
