MORE competitors have dared to take part in the 42km race (main event) of the MTN Kampala International marathon with 388 registering to run the distance.

Information from the marathon data centre indicates that 61 more runners have showed interest in the full marathon compared to last year's 327. A total of over 19,000 will compete in the annual international event.

There will be subsidiary events that include the half marathon and the 10km flat and wheelchair, open and corporate events. It will start and end at Kololo Air strip

Over 200 teams will battle for the 10km corporate challenge in the marathon due in Kampala November 22.

A week to the main event, the subsidiary 10km wheelchair competition will take place starting at Kololo.

According to a release from the organisers, over 100 companies have registered teams, many of them entering more than two. The proceeds will go towards Red Cross’ charity works.

Dfcu bank has entered the biggest number of teams, 16 in number, with UMEME and Uganda Communications Commission entering 10 each. Each corporate team of four athletes pays a registration fee of sh0.5m.

“Having so many corporate and businesses entering the marathon this year shows that they value the charity work. The huge number of corporate entries means more proceeds to the less privileged and vulnerable in society. For this reason we would like to thank all those who’ve registered,” said MTN public relations officer Sheila Kangwagye yesterday.

Stanbic Bank has registered the highest individual participants (325).

Vision group has entered 149 runners.
