Dairy body toughens on milk quality

The Dairy Development Authority (DDA) has embarked on arresting dealers who add water in the milk.
On Wednesday, inspectors from the dairy body took samples of milk from a number of coolers and freezers from different parts of Kampala to check the standard of milk.
Over 10 suspects were arrested from Kafumbe Mukasa Road. They included Jackson Mugabi, Berna Babirye, Grace Mbabazi, John Kamugisha and Sam Kutesa.
Liz Ahimbisibwe, the DDA inspector, said this was the first time they were arresting suspects.
The suspects will be taken to court to answer to charges of adulteration of milk, she said.
“We have been inspecting these businesses and giving them warnings. But, they have ignored the regulations,†she said.
According to the regulations, dealers are supposed to sell milk to consumers without adding any water.
However, all the five dairy supply points along Kafumbe Mukasa Road had not complied.
one of the samples taken from the coolers at Karutinda dairy supply indicated that in 100 litres of milk, there were 17 litres of water.
“Firstly, we are not sure of the source or purity of this added water. Also, there has to be value for money on the side of the customer,†Ahimbisibwe said.
During a previous inspection of the same dairy in October, she added, it was found that for every 100 litres of milk there were 38 litres of water.
Also found with diluted milk were Mbarara, Karokarungi and Waswa Dairies with 16.06, 6.07 and 5.07 litres of water to 100 litres of milk, respectively.
