President Yoweri Museveni and the cabinet have endorsed the creation of five new districts in Buganda region. The Local Government minister, Adolf Mwesige, revealed this on Saturday during a meeting with local leaders from Buganda region at Ridar Hotel in Seeta, Mukono district.

Mwesige said the names of the proposed districts had already been forwarded to Parliament for endorsement. The proposed districts are Gomba, Kyankwanzi, Butambala, Kalungu, and Buvuma which are to be curved from Mpigi, Kiboga, Masaka, and Mukono respectively.

Mwesige said Buikwe district which was curved out of Mukono would start functioning this financial year, while the five new ones will kick off next year. He also said more town councils would be created.

Mwesige cautioned politicians against fighting over where the new district headquarters would be located, and called for an amicable way of handling the matter.

The minister castigated the rampant corruption in the local governments and asked leaders to fight the evil. He cited the District Service Commissions and the tendering process as areas with rampant corruption.

Mwesige said he had received complaints from the public that officials from the commissions were selling out jobs to applicants. “There is an old man who paid sh8m for his two children to get jobs at the district but the officials took the money without giving the children jobs and did not refund it,” he said.

Mwesige said the old man reported the matter and investigations had already started, warning that he would take action against corrupt officials.

The meeting was chaired by Siraje Kizito Nkugwa, the chairperson of Uganda Local Government Association, central region branch.
