FOLLOWING the rains, there has been an increase in the supply of many foods. For example, prices for a litre of pasteurised milk, fresh peas and beans have fallen. A litre of milk goes for sh1,400, a kilo of peas goes for sh3,000 and fresh beans cost sh2,500.
Get the best of these bargains at either evening markets or from street vendors. On the contrary, the supply of matooke has remained low, pushing the prices as high as sh22,000 for a big bunch and sh13,000 for a small bunch. Besides the low supply, the matooke is of poor quality. Traders blame the poor yield on the prolonged drought in the past months.
In addition, sweet potatoes registered low supply on the market. This is mainly attributed to the end of the harvest season coupled with the potato worm that has hit production areas, especially, in the east.
However, take heart, now that sweet potatoes are scarce, you can substitute them with cassava. Besides buying the cassava from the market, you can opt for better bargains from vehicles hawking it around suburbs. For as little as sh500, you can buy four to five tubers.
