LOCAL tennis star Duncan Mugabe emerged the overall winner of the first Younger Achievers Awards. He was handed an accolade with a sh5m cheque at Serena hotel in Kampala on Saturday.
Mugabe beat other contenders in the same category featured; Moses Baryamujura (Pinnacle Security), Mujib Kasule (sports), Simon Munyevu, (Crane Engravers) and Mariam Hajat (education).
“Mr. President, I am humbled and overwhelmed, though I deserve this. I never expected it would happen in my favour,†a jovial Mugabe told President Yoweri Museveni, the chief guest. He added that the award befits him given the years he has been nurturing his talent since he was ten years old.
Mugabe paid tribute to his father James Kasumba of National Council of Sports, his manager Cedric Babu, John Nagenda (Uganda Tennis Federation president) and Uganda Sports Press Association for nurturing his talent.
The awards aimed at recognising efforts of youth that have had notable achievements whose roles have also benefited others.
Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised the event in partnership with Tetea Uganda, Vision Group, Germany charity GTZ, Standard Chartered, bank, Sanyu FM, MTN, City Tyres, Bank of Uganda among others.
Judges said Mugabe triumphed because he defied childhood economic challenges and persisted in pursuing his goals in sports. He has won numerous local and international tournaments and ranked among the first 600 world top tennis players.
Over 108 youths mostly business entrepreneurs aged between 18 and 35, competed.
Nine others won in different categories with President Museveni taking the life time achievement award.
