WHAT was your first job? Where and when was it? How much did you earn then?

MY first job was with SM mobile disco as an MC in 1990, but when I learnt how to handle disc machines I was appointed a DJ. My earnings depended on the work rate, usually we earned sh60,000 per weekend. After two years I joined AngeNoir Discothèque as the MC and DJ. With the advent of FM radio stations in 1993, I joined Sanyu FM and was earning sh250,000 per month. However, by the time I left in 1996, I was earning sh600,000.

What is the most enduring memory of your first job?

The most enduring moment came when things were getting hard at the beginning. I had just left home and was gaining prominence, yet my financial stand sharply contradicted with my celebrity status. Besides, my friend who accommodated me in those initial years brought many people of diverse characters. I learnt to cope in hard times.

What did you learn from it that makes you a better boss?

I learnt that when you want to be independent in life you have to persevere regardless of the appalling situations in your life. Teamwork was also instilled in me in those days. We had to interact with people from all walks of life. I learnt that hardwork is the mother of success. There are no short cuts.

Did the first job change your career path or perspective of life?

My first job had a profound effect on my eventual career and perspective of my life. I was brought up in a well-to-do family of the late Justice Arthur Oder. I had no idea about the harsh realities of life beyond our fortified family. From the wealthy background to struggling for accommodation brought me closer to the ‘real life’ and awakened my life to work hard. I also came to terms with my ‘marriage’ to the media industry.
