THE state minister for higher education, Mwesigwa Rukutana, has urged the youth to embrace industrial training. Rukutana said it is important that Ugandans embrace the training because it imparts skills that prepare people for the demanding job market.
“We have many educated people. The fact that people are unemployed is because they lack the skills. That is why Ugandans are crying about foreigners taking their jobs,†Rukutana said.
He was speaking during the release of the Occupational Assessments and Trade Test results for 2009 at the Ministry of Education headquarters in Kampala on Friday.
The examinations were conducted by the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) from May 25 to 29 at different assessment centres countrywide.
The examinations covered 15 occupational areas in theory and practice. Rukutana emphasised the importance of industrial training, saying it would transform Uganda into an industrialised country. He argued that people should not despise humble beginnings because they eventually yield fruits.
“There is nothing degrading for one to start low by doing vocational courses. People start low and progress to better professions,†Rukutana emphasised.
He commended the overall performance of the candidates, and urged graduates from both the universal primary and secondary education programmes to join vocational institutes.
Noting the importance of team work for an organisation to achieve its objectives, he cited the fields of engineering and medicine, saying for every engineer, 10 technicians must be at hand, and 10 nurses must assist every doctor.
Rukutana said the ministry would provide more staff and equipment at the DIT.
