EDITOR—It seems that serving in the army in Uganda is not only risky at the frontline but everywhere in the country. I have followed the President’s remarks at different occasions relating to the untimely deaths of senior soldiers and I have a feeling that, just like me, he is not convinced by the reasons that are given in the post-mortem reports.

On the death of Brig Noble Mayombo, President Museveni vowed to probe his former ADC’s death.

Now the President has made a similar promise in the case of Cadet Brian Bukenya’s death. Maj Gen.

James Kazini has met his death in a presumed domestic brawl. But Lydia Draru’s behaviour is not convincing that she could be the perpetrator of the crime. Where does a suspect get the confidence to tell boda- boda cyclists to report her to Police for the murder of such a decorated officer? Isn’t it fishy that Draru retracted her earlier statement that she was acting in self-defence after the general drew his pistol on her when it was later discovered that the general had left his pistol in his leather bag in the car? Of what use was an iron bar in Draru’s home? Was this a pre-planned activity? If it was, where did she get the courage to attack the fierce general?

How could she hit the trained soldier thrice without a response from him or without raising an alarm?

Could there have been some accomplices? Who is killing our soldiers? I smell a rat.
