How do you balance your faith and taking ARVs?

Face HIV with Dr. Watiti

Dear doctor,
I am a Christian and have found out that I am HIV-positive and need to start taking ARVs. I hear you are a Christian but you take ARVs. How have you managed to balance your faith in God and take ARVs at the same time?
Grace

Dear Grace,
There is no contradiction between trusting in God and adhering to my drugs (ARVs). On the contrary, I believe in both medical science and faith in God.

So, I take my drugs as if my health depended solely on that but also pray and trust in God because my life depends on that. This has worked for me and many others.

In any case, we Christians believe God is the source of all good things including the knowledge he has given us to make wonder drugs like ARVs which improve one’s quality of life.

It is true ARVs do not cure HIV but they control the replication of the virus so that the immune system can be given time to repair and help an HIV-positive person live a fairly healthy life free from opportunistic infections which are characteristic of advanced HIV infection.

We should work hard to see that all people infected with HIV who need ARVs can access them.
