The Government has been urged to speed up the rural electrification programme.

Sheema North MP Elioda Tumwesigye said this would enable rural areas develop socially and economically.

Tumwesigye attributed the poverty in rural areas to the lack of electricity.

He said in developed countries people work at night, which has enabled them develop at a faster rate.

“Other countries have used the night to increase production, but Ugandans are using the night to produce children,” Tumwesigye said.

He also said the Government would support people who organise themselves and collect funds for electricity connection.

“You can register and apply for power. The Government will give you a contribution,” Tumwesigye said.

He appealed to the youth to start small-scale industries, adding that the Government had set aside funds to aid youth groups.

Tumwesigye was recently speaking at the commissioning of a power line at Kigarama sub-county in Bushenyi district.
The line connects Kigarama and Kyangyenyi sub-counties to electricity at Kabutsye trading centre.
The resident district commissioner, John Maliro, advised the residents to use electricity profitably.
“This is one way of changing people’s lives. You should shun politicians whose intentions are to change leadership instead of transforming society,” Maliro said.
