Makerere smiles
FOR long Makerere University has been in the news for the wrong reasons. Scandals of cheating and financial mismanagement has been the news about the 85-year old university. However, on Saturday, November 28, there was cause for Makerere staff to smile. Honouring the former president of Tanzania, Benjamin Mkapa and alumni of Makerere, the Makerere Convocation chairperson, Bruce Balaba, said the university is going to have a five-acre alumni centre in Katanga. It is going to be the first in the country. Good show if the project takes off.

Kakeeto’s advice

On Idd al-Adha prayers last Friday, Muslims who had gathered at the Muslim sports ground were told to participate in national politics instead of lamenting that they are few in every post. Sheikh Suleiman Kakeeto, the leader of the Uganda Muslim Tabliq community assured them that no one can get good things on just silver plate.

MPs fill House

Intimidation tactics carried the week as parliamentarians discussed the Land amendment Bill. Speaker Edward Ssekandi had it rough as he tried to cool tempers. A crowd that followed the land debate on Television quipped: “Why don’t MPs always turn up in big numbers like they have done for this Bill? I am sure if they had been doing this before no one would have minded even if they increased their allowances.” Honourable Members, have you heard that?

Kivejinja furious

The third deputy prime minister and minister of internal affairs is battling it out with some public servants and the opposition members who he says are sabotaging Government programmes. Kirunda Kivejinja has lashed out at them for calling Government programmes Bona Bagwe (let them all fail).
