Participants of a meeting on food were last Friday divided over a proposal to introduce a policy requiring food industries to fortify their products, reports Josephine Maseruka.
Food fortification is the adding of value to food using micro-nutrients.
The participants were mainly from sugar, maize, wheat and oil industries and consumer organisations like the education ministry, armed forces and the World Food Organisation.
Grace Labong, the head of Vantage Communications, which conducted a survey on food fortification, had proposed the introduction of a mandatory policy for food industries.
However, Dr. William Ssali, the coordinator of production and distribution of grain food fortification in the health ministry, said a mandatory policy would be difficult to enforce.
The meeting was held at the Royal Suits, Bugolobi in Kampala.
