TOP chess player Harold Wanyama lived up to his pre-tourney billing by winning the Rwabushenyi Memorial international chess championship with seven points out of eight in the event on Sunday at Kati Kati restaurant.

On his way to victory and the top prize of sh1m, Wanyama beat Ivan Katamba, Alex Ruzigura, Joe Kaamu, Nathan Ateka (Kenya), Farouk Fauza and William Abiye (Rwanda) before settling for hard fought draws with Kenya’s Ben Magana and Hassan Mulambe in the last round.

Kenya’s Magana finished in second position with 6.5 points after beating Shadrack Kantinti in the final round.

He had earlier beaten Bob Bibasa and drawn three times against Ruzigura and Wanyama among others.

“I feel proud to be the first winner of this tournament and I must give credit to the sponsors for this gesture of remembering our founder chairman,” Wanyama said after his win.

“It was good to see foreign players come over to challenge and they gave us a run for our money.”

The ladies category was won by an expectant mother, Christine Namaganda who surprised onlookers to win sh0.5m. The tournament was sponsored by Civil Aviation Authority.
