THE fisheries state minister, Fred Mukisa, has slapped a ban on transportation of fish in buses as a way of stopping trade in immature fish.

“My office has learnt that immature fish is being transported to markets in buses and this must immediately stop. We are experiencing a decline in the fish stocks and we need to make every effort to reverse the trend,” he said.

In a statement dated December 14, Mukisa said the fish quality assurance rules deem the transportation of fish products in a vehicle or container that does not conform to the standards an offence.

The minister said the fish is normally smoked, salted or sun-dried and packed in sacks, boxes or big baskets. it is then loaded onto the buses which he said was a risk to the consumers’ health.

He added that the ministry had directed all district Police commanders, resident district commissioners and fisheries officials to intercept any bus suspected to be carrying fish.

Mukisa added that the Council of Ministers of Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation resolved to blacklist illegal fish traders, to share the information with agencies like the Uganda Revenue Authority and the Police and to enforce the law on illegal fish trading.
