A Police officer attached to Apac Police station was on Monday night shot dead by his wife after a domestic scuffle, the Police have said.

Evelyn Aciro, a former Amuka militia, allegedly grabbed the gun from her husband, James Okullo, after overpowering him and shot him twice in the legs. He died instantly.

Okullo was deployed on night duty at Stanbic Bank but when he came back to check on his wife at midnight, he did not find her in the house.

“He waited and when the woman returned, a quarrel broke out, leading to a fight,” Samuel Okot, the deputy Police commander for the central-north region, told journalists at Erute Police headquarters in Lira yesterday.

Okot said Okullo had been accusing his wife of extramarital affairs. He returned home unexpectedly to establish whether his wife was at home.

“Being a trained woman, she overpowered the man, grabbed his gun and turned it on him,” Okot said.

The incident reportedly occurred at the Police barracks where the couple was staying.

Aciro, who hid in the toilet after the incident, was arrested and detained at Apac Police Station.

“She is the first suspect although investigations are still going on to establish the details of Okullo’s death,” Okot added.

In another incident in Tororo, a 65-year-old woman is being detained on suspicion of having killed her husband.
Torofida Akinyi is alleged to have served her husband, Roymond Omiti, 70, food mixed with poison. The incident occurred on Christmas day at Oburu.

Tororo district Police commander Goudencio Okumu said samples of the food have been taken to the Government chemist in Kampala for analysis. According to the Police, the deceased had three wives, with the suspect being the eldest.
