VICE-President Gilbert Bukenya has described Bishop Adrian Kivumbi Ddungu as the biggest missionary Uganda has ever had.
“The bishop did all his work wonderfully well and was a strong educationist in Masaka and the whole counrty,†the VP said of the deceased bishop.
The retired Bishop of Masaka Catholic diocese died on Wednesday morning having suffered two strokes and pneumonia. He died at St. Francis Hospital in Nsambya where he had been admitted for over two weeks. Bukenya went on to describe the late bishop as the strongest negotiator between the church and the Government.
“We have lost a great person who led his life very well and showed us a good example,†he said, speaking to journalists at his residence in Garuga. The bishop will be laid to rest on Saturday at Villa Maria, Masaka.
Born in 1923, Ddungu was ordained priest in 1952, appointed bishop in 1961 and ordained a bishop a year later. He retired in 1998 and was succeeded by Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa.
By the time of his death, a 96-page book titled Bishop Adrian K. Ddungu His Life, Vocation and Legacy, by Benedict Ssettuuma Jr. and John Mary Waliggo, had just been printed and was due to be launched.
