A UPDF soldier deployed to escort the deputy chief of defence forces, Gen. Ivan Koreta, was shot dead on Christmas after raping a woman and beating up residents of Atyak sub-county in Amuru district

According to the regional army spokesman, Capt. Ronald Kakurungu, Tyson Okidi, attached to the land forces in Bombo was deployed with other soldiers to escort Gen. Koreta to the burial of former minister, Agad Didi, in Moyo when he misbehaved.

“Okidi escaped from duty and abandoned his superior on December 21. Kakurungu told journalists at a press conference on Wednesday at his office.

“The following day, he raped a woman near Ayugi river after which the army got the information and deployed forces to pursue him.”

“On December 23, he boarded a commuter vehicle forcefully. When he realised that we had put a roadblock to net him, he jumped off the vehicle and fled in the bush,” he said.

He said Okidi was shot dead during a gunfire exchange with UPDF soldiers at Pawel-Pukumo in Atyak sub-county, on December 28.

According to the LC3 chairman of Atyak sub- county, John Bosco Ochan, they got private documents in Okidi’s pockets showing that he belonged to the commando battalion at Bar-Alegi in Lira district.

One rifle with four magazines of bullets were also recovered from Okidi.

“The people of Atyak did not enjoy Christmas celebrations because of the fear of being attacked by this soldier. It looks like there is another errant soldier still in the bush,” Ochan added.

On the same day, a civilian, Ocuc Oryema, 27, was mistakenly shot dead by UPDF soldiers in Atyak sub-county, Kakurungu said.

He said Oryema was walking to Kitgum district on Okidi-Apyeta road when the communities mistook him for a rebel and informed the army.

Kakurungu stated that two UPDF soldiers had been arrested for killing Oryema.

“We are also thinking of holding the Atyak detachment commander for giving a wrong briefing to his soldiers before deploying them. We shall investigate the incident.”
