USPA nominates Obua, Kipsiro, Muwonge plus the rugby and cricket teams

THE race for the coveted USPA-Uganda telecom Sports Personality of the Year award will be a five-way battle this time round, reports Swalley Kenyi.

Individual athletes Moses Kipsiro, David Obua and Susan Muwonge are favourites to grab the honour of Sportsman of the Year ahead of teams Rugby Cranes and the national cricket team.

The Sportsman of the 2007 will be named at the annual Uganda Sports Press gala set for next month in Kampala.

Sports scribes under their umbrella body USPA, also voted for the best athletes in different disciplines at their monthly meeting at Oasis Restaurant at Lugogo yesterday.

Kipsiro—the 2006 Sportsman of the Year—is already a winner, having been named Track and Field Athlete of 2007. Kipsiro won a gold medal in the 5000m at the All Africa Games and a bronze medal at the World Championships.

Cranes and Kaizer Chiefs winger Obua picked the 2007 Footballer of the Year award after beating Dan Wagaluka, Hamis Kitagenda, and Caesar Okuti in the scribes’ vote.

Obua’s five goals including a hat-trick against Niger made him second top scorer in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and placed him in contention for the overall title

Despite making the prestigious final five, daring female rally driver Susan ‘Super Lady’ Muwonge, who became the first woman to win a Clubman rally champion event and finished second in the national championship, was edged for the rally-driver of the year award by Ponsiano Lwakataka.

Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR) champions, Rugby Cranes made the list for their achievement in Madagascar last September, while the national cricket team made the nomination list on account of winning the World Division III league in Australia.

Squash and hockey were struck off the list of sports disciplines because they were largely inactive.

Teenage tennis star Duncan Mugabe was voted sports personality of December.
