AS the new academic year approaches, parents will be out in search of places for their infants in nursery schools. Some have already got admission. Parents need to ask themselves what these school will offer to their children.

With the desire for high grades swallowing up institutions at all levels, even nursery schools are upping their stakes by, among other things, teaching primary school content to the pupils; loading them with workloads that could easily make them detest school.

That may seem alluring to parents who, in the same vein, seek to begin on the grade-making process early, but in the long run, it is counter-productive for the child, the parent and the community where this machine-child-turned-adult will live and work. It is not enough to look at the swings, slides and other deceptively ‘modern’ facilities at the school.

The human element is also vital. The education ministry also needs to pick more interest in these schools.
