Musicians get Beijing 2008 offer

LOCAL musicians have been invited to take part in the Olympic sport and singing contest, where they can win about sh2.5m and perform at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

LOCAL musicians have been invited to take part in the Olympic sport and singing contest, where they can win about sh2.5m and perform at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The contest requires musicians to produce a song that reflects the spirit of Olympism and is open to all musicians according to Seppie Bamutiire, the head of the local Olympic museum and library.

The song should be an original composition and should be submitted by March 31. The top three songs at national level will be forwarded to the international competition.

“We expect a composition made by a maximum of 12 people. The contestants can also enter recorded music or DVDs,” said Bumutiire.

Meanwhile, Uganda has benefited to the tune of sh200m for the last seven years from Olympic Solidarity programmes to prepare athletes for Beijing.

According to Uganda Olympic Committee president Maj.Gen.Francis Nyangweso, early preparation is key and they are now preparing teams for the 2012 Games.

“You need a strategic programme and we have been able to work towards it. We have been able to offer scholarships to badminton player Edwin Ekiring and tennis player Duncan Mugabe,” said Nyangweso.

Athletes Boniface Kiprop and Dorcus Inzikuru have also benefitted. Currently, weightlifting, tennis, badminton and athletics are enjoying Olympic Solidarity support.
