THE wife of the President and Ruhaama MP Janet Museveni has paid tribute to visiting American students of Wisconsin University for helping the poor in Africa.
She made the remarks last week at Kyamate SS in Ntungamo district after inspecting the water harvesting and storage tank being constructed by the students. The students are carrying out the project in different educational centres in Ruhaama.
Under the scheme, the students, who work through an NGO called The Village Health Programme, raise funds that are dedicated to the health of mothers and children, provision of water, care and support to HIV/AIDS patients and education sector. They use locally invented technology by Dr. Musaazi of Makerere University to construct water tanks out of bricks.
Janet commended them for choosing Ruhaama to carry out their work, saying the project would not only provide water to the communities but also give training and employment opportunities to the youth.
She challenged the youth to take up the example of their American counterparts and work for the good of the community, especially the elderly and the needy.
She pledged to avail the same training and the necessary technological support to the youth so that the project that has been started continues after the Americans’ departure.
Prof. John Katili of Makerere University’s School of Public Health commended Musaazi for inventing the brick-laying technology that is cheap, ensures access to clean water and helps in building permanent houses. He thanked Janet for supporting the project.
